TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, MAY 4TH 2023. The question of why some cages operate better than others is a recurring question in aquaculture. We know that breeders are at all times looking to find ways of achieving higher degrees of efficiencies in their operations. One source of higher efficiency is related to the feeding strategies breeders employ. Typical factors that impact efficiency in feeding is, for instance, time of starting and stopping feeding, the feeding intensity curve, the number of pellets appearing on cameras, camera depths and more. By experimenting with these factors, breeders typically eventually arrive at a combination of optimal values which give the perception of efficiency, if so only subjectively and not based on any quantitative metrics.
Through experience, breeders indeed do arrive at reasonable feeding strategies. Though, it is still commonplace to find large deviations from cage to cage and over time in the same cage. The degree to which a feeding strategy is working is—for instance—vulnerable to variance related to the work scheduling of feeding operators (typically one week on, one week off). From week to week, thus, two or more feeding operators might be employing their own (different) feeding strategies and arriving at different outcomes. The subjectivity introduced as a function of feeding operators' differing perceptions of what an optimal feeding strategy is from cage to cage and week to week thus influences yields in a similar way as poor visibility and malfunctioning feeds.
To help fish farmers develop optimal feeding strategies, Piscada recently announcent Insight.
